At Dotgraf, we believe design has the power to make ideas travel – to cross bridges, speak new languages, and light up the stories behind places and people. That’s exactly what we set out to do with APTRAD, the Portuguese Association of Translators and Interpreters.

What began in Porto quickly grew into a national journey. Four cities. Four conferences. One evolving visual identity. From the granite soul of Porto to the vibrant waters of Aveiro, we created a unified design system that highlights what makes each place – and each event – unique.

Porto: Where the Journey Begins

Our first collaboration, Translate Porto, set the tone. An illustration rooted in the city’s architecture, yet projected into the future. We drew inspiration from the golden age of computing graphics – when the pixel met poetry – to reflect Porto’s cosmopolitan and multicultural energy. Technology, culture, and connection converge in a playful composition that’s unmistakably Porto.

Translate Porto by Dotgraf

Coimbra: Academic Precision Meets Graphic Rhythm

Next came Translate Coimbra. A new theme – “Specialize to Stand Out” – and a new city to interpret. The same visual language, tuned to Coimbra’s rhythm. Academic towers and tiled facades take shape in a palette that diverges from Porto while preserving consistency. This is how coherence becomes identity: not by repeating, but by evolving.

Translate Coimbra by Dotgraf

Guimarães: The Origin of a Nation, Reimagined

With Translate Guimarães, the challenge was dual: honor the past, and embrace the now. We integrated the historical weight of Guimarães with the bold geometry of the José de Guimarães Arts Center and the ascent of the Penha Tramway – tradition and transformation, side by side. A city of origins, redesigned for the future.

Translate Guimarães – Dotgraf

Aveiro: A Strategy in Color

Finally, Translate Aveiro. “New Scenarios, New Strategies” called for a brighter, more fluid approach. We leaned into Aveiro’s maritime identity – canals, moliceiros, university landmarks – and borrowed the warm tones of ovos moles to signal bold tradition. The result? A strategy in color and rhythm that respects the whole while celebrating the part.

Translate Aveiro – Dotgraf

A System, Not a Template

This series is more than four posters. It’s a design system in motion – flexible, memorable, and emotionally anchored in place. Each identity speaks in its own tone, yet clearly belongs to the same voice.

At Dotgraf, We don’t just illustrate cities, we translate their soul into graphic design

Translate Coimbra by Dotgraf

Looking to give your event a strong visual identity?

Let’s craft something that speaks louder than words.

This year, Dotgraf marks ten years of collaboration with Varzinn Hotel – a partnership that has blossomed with the teamwork between Dotraf and CEO Sérgio Torre. Over these years, we’ve embarked on a journey that transcends mere aesthetics, crafting three distinct versions of the hotel’s website and numerous graphic projects. Among these, one project stands out—the breakfast wall illustration that has become a hallmark.

21 short stories on serendipitous meetings

Our collaboration reached new creative heights after our success with The Family Spot blog. Sérgio brought us a challenge that sparked our imaginations: to create a series of short stories about chance encounters at the hotel—serendipitous meetings that blossom into friendships, and sometimes, true love!

Mosaics and icons were used to animate the intro

We realized that a simple graphic approach wouldn’t suffice for the dynamic world of Instagram. So, we married design with storytelling, using mosaic tiles to introduce videos, blending design with narrative. The result? Twenty-one micro-short films, each one a delightful vignette that invites viewers to step away from their screens, leave the comfort of their couches, and embrace life’s unexpected adventures.

A pause in the war, a suspended night where the grass hides everything. Design for Seiva Trupe play “Noite de Solidão no Capim” celebrating 50 years of April’s 25th.

Our goal was to pique curiosity about this captivating production, which offers a unique perspective on the Portuguese Colonial war. Building upon the poster design, we brought it to life through animation, synchronized with the immersive sound design by FUSE.

Tune in to Portuguese National television to catch the spot! Additionally, we’re thrilled to announce that “Noite de Solidão no Capim” placed 3rd out of 800 entries in the Celebrations of April’s 25th competition.

When Jogadores Anónimos Portugal/ Gamblers Anonymous approached us to create a unified website, we saw it as a compelling challenge. Adhering to AA site guidelines, we prioritized clear communication and user access. Designing diverse user experiences, we knew our approach needed to foster calm, secure connections, making it effortless for users to engage with JA.

The website features dynamic information delivery. The homepage showcases the top three news highlights, while daily reflections offer fresh content each day.

Mobile experience is of paramount importance. It’ll allow users that are facing gambling addition to find information for their recovery, directly from their phones. Powerful yet serene CTAs (Call to Action) are populating the website so new users can reach groups through their direct numbers.

The outcome is a clean, user-friendly site that presents information directly to both new and existing users. The visual metaphor of a mountain road captures the journey of recovery, illustrating that the path, though challenging, always leads to a better place.

In line with the strong visual metaphor, we’ve revamped the logo, incorporating bordeaux and dark red as the official colors. The logo remains steadfast with JA, while the backdrop of mountains symbolizes the journey ahead.

We’ve received feedback that their phones are ringing nonstop. While the issue of gambling addiction is a growing concern in Portugal, we’re also aware that our efforts are making an impact.

https://jogadoresanonimos.com.pt

In 15 years of Dotgraf, we’ve been the trusted branding partner for more than 20 startups, helping them ignite their ideas to the world with impact, with a 90% success rate. Our client-centric approach and passion for solving problems have been the driving force behind our success. Steve Jobs used to say that the only way to do great work is to love what you do. That ‘s so true.

After each initial meeting with a startup, we leave the conference room with a surge of creative energy that propels us into the new project. We love the challenge of crafting a brand that resonates with the target audience and helps the startup achieve its goals.

Creativity is at the heart of what we do, and our design process is centered around fostering this creative energy. This process allows us to experiment, communicate our ideas clearly, and better understand our clients’ needs. We believe that evolving the client/ creative relationship into a collaborative process, is the key factor.

Our portfolio showcases our commitment to world-class design, and we’re always thrilled to see our clients achieve their branding goals.
As designers, we understand that typography is an essential aspect of both web and graphic design. It is the foundation of visual communication, providing structure, hierarchy, and legibility.

As designers, we understand that typography is an essential aspect of both web and graphic design. It is the foundation of visual communication, providing structure, hierarchy, and legibility. But today, designers like us are taking bold and unique typography choices to the next level in web and graphic design.

Beat #002 is a design from my series of 3 posters exploring typography as design element

With web design continuously evolving, typography is playing an increasingly crucial role. It helps establish hierarchy, guides the user’s attention, and creates a consistent visual style for websites. By incorporating bold and unique typography choices, we have the power to infuse character, personality, and interest into a website. These design elements make a brand’s tone of voice and messaging more memorable and impactful while enhancing the overall user experience. A well-designed typography system that emphasizes readability and accessibility can increase engagement and provide a seamless and enjoyable user experience.

Website for Portuguese renowned theatre company Seiva Trupe, taking advantage of bold fonts to display content’s hierarchy

In graphic design, typography is also critical. Whether it’s a logo, poster, or packaging design, typography plays an important role in generating intrigue, delivering brand messages, and fostering engagement with the target audience. The availability of various fonts, styles, and techniques offers us numerous opportunities to communicate a brand’s personality and messaging memorably and impactfully.

Beat #001 is a design from my series of 3 posters exploring typography as design element

As designers, we have always embraced typography as a tool for creativity and self-expression. The result is a wide range of unique and bold typography designs that reflect our individuality as well as the brand. These designs can go beyond the traditional serifs and sans-serifs, and take on a more adventurous and expressive form. We’re not afraid to experiment with color, size, and weight, and to push the boundaries of what is considered conventional in typography.

Design is not simply a job or a task to be accomplished, but rather a way of life. It encompasses every aspect of our existence, from the way we interact with our surroundings to the way we express ourselves. It’s not just about creating aesthetically pleasing projects, but it’s about problem-solving and creating solutions that are both functional and meaningful.

At its core, design is a process of exploration and experimentation. It involves asking questions, challenging assumptions, and constantly seeking new and innovative ways of approaching problems. This is why we must be lifelong learners, constantly seeking new knowledge and skills to improve our work and stay ahead of the curve.

It’s not just a profession, but a calling, requiring a certain level of passion and commitment, as well as an unwavering focus on quality and attention to detail. We must be willing to put in the time and effort required to create work that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also meaningful and impactful.

It requires dedication, commitment, and a constant drive to create work that is meaningful, impactful, and truly makes a difference in the world. We must embrace our calling, and always strive to create work that reflects our commitment to the craft. Personally, I see myself as the Oscar Niemeyer of design – willing to work tirelessly until my creative vision is fully realized. For me, design is not just a craft, it’s a lifelong passion that touches every aspect of my being.

Dotgraf was founded with the goal of breaking down barriers and exploring new and innovative approaches to design. This vision was born out of a desire for independence and a commitment to push the boundaries of what is considered the standard in the design industry.

Throughout the journey of building Dotgraf, I encountered numerous challenges. From unfulfilled investments and partners who couldn’t handle the pressure when times got tough, to facing financial crises and balancing the decision between expanding the team or maintaining the status quo. These challenges tested my resilience and determination to succeed.

In order to bring success to the studio, I had to develop unexpected skills, including the crucial role of CEO. Regardless of the size of the team, whether it be a large group or just a driven duo, being the CEO entails managing the business effectively, and I take this responsibility seriously.

Upon my return to Portugal after accepting an invitation to work abroad, I was motivated to take Dotgraf to new heights. My focus was not merely on expanding the client list, but also on establishing Dotgraf as a recognized creative powerhouse

Despite the difficulties, not all of my journey with Dotgraf was tough. In 2019, I was fortunate enough to welcome my wife as the creative director. We had previously worked together as a team at Efdual.com in 2001 before pursuing separate careers, but were now able to reunite and bring our skills and experience back to the studio.

This leads to where we stand now. Faced with the pandemic, we had to quit the Sá da Bandeira studio that we loved and this January moved to Boavista, Porto’s business center, to an awesome office. Even better, we have lots of new projects to share in our portfolio.

Want to know how this story ends? So do we, keep following us as we promise to continually stretch the boundaries of creativity!

Creativity: Beyond Formulas and Shortcuts

About unlocking the full potential of imagination with design and creativity. No formulas, no shortcuts, and no limits.

Design and creativity are two closely intertwined concepts that can have a profound impact on a business or individual. However, it is often assumed that there is a formula to creativity, a roadmap to success. Paul Rand, one of the most influential graphic designers of the 20th century, once said, “Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.”

The same can be said for creativity. There are no formulas, no magic solutions, and no shortcuts to unlocking the full potential of one’s imagination. It takes hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks and embrace failure.

I once had the privilege to attend a meeting with Henrique Cayatte, a renowned graphic designer and illustrator. The meeting happened at Tearfil back in 2004. We were talking about target marketing forms and he echoed this sentiment when he said that “Creativity can’t be reduced to a formula. It is a constant exploration of new ideas and the courage to bring them to life.” It was inspiring.

Creativity and design are about pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted territory. It’s about taking the time to ask questions, to experiment, and to find new ways of looking at the world. The beauty of creativity is that there are no limits, no set rules, and no prescribed pathways to follow.

As Steve Jobs once said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Those who embrace their creativity, who take risks and embrace their imagination, are the ones who will ultimately succeed in their careers.

The bottom line is that creativity and design cannot be contained or limited by formulas or shortcuts. These are expressions of the human spirit, and as such, constantly evolving and changing. The best way to unleash its full potential is to embrace the unknown, to take risks, to never stop exploring new ideas.

After we’ve created the logo for US based studio Mettadate, Lauren invited us to redesign the new cover for her book The Mindful Dating Journal, at the moment selling at Amazon. This was the design we came up with. It’s pretty cool to have a design the client loved being featured on Amazon.
Know more about the book here

Published last June, Varzinn Hotel brand new website went to Google’s search first page in a month. How did we come up with that? Quite simple, web design process, effective wireframes and rule of thumb, content is king. By developing the website on Elementor we’ve managed to create our wireframes for both desktop and mobile super fast… and SEO ready. Creating a design that combined graphics, headers and content with SEO in mind, made all the difference. Dotgraf way of work, aiming for the highest design quality and development standards, always with the client’s success in mind

Last June we’ve created Mettadate logo for Lauren Smith, a Senior Production Designer and co-author of “The Mindful Dating Journal”. On our three logo proposals we’ve approached the studio’s concept (that joins Metta’s Buddhist meditation to Lauren’s vision to inspire people to bring more loving-kindness to themselves and others while dating) by combining visuals, ideas and concepts into new creative forms. From Mandalas expanding from love to out of the box approach, whole project felt like a creative playground to work on, inspired by Lauren’s vision

Dotgraf recently joined forces with US-based Raconteur Animation to create a captivating graphic user interface design for a presentation video for ULC Robotics, a multinational company. Our team was responsible for designing a set of illustrations and a comprehensive icon system, which were later animated by Raconteur to bring the design to life. It was a thrilling project to work on and felt like a journey into the realm of science fiction. The most remarkable aspect of the project was the fact that it was created for today’s cutting-edge robotic technology

We’ve recently delivered a new logo and branding for Raconteur Animation, a Texas based animation studio. As nerds, it wasn’t hard for us to find inspiration for this project. Raconteur’s work is almost science fiction, delivering 3D animation for companies in aerospace, nanotech, biotech and robotics. At Dotgraf, our level of commitment was the same we deliver to all our clients. The quality level for all three logo proposals followed our high standards. In fact, any of the proposals could have been the chosen one. From a design inspired by the space-age glory days, to a super elegant R, here is the making of the Raconteur Animation brand:

Dotgraf has moved from Sá da Bandeira to Clérigos Typographia-Cowork, a place that our clients already know well. Living times like these, we wanted to gather resources and take advantage of the finest working space in Porto. Located in Clérigos near the epic tower and Porto’s Photography Museum, with beautiful interiors such as the 1800’s renewed meeting room known as the “Salão Nobre”, it’s a workplace we’re proud to belong again

Recently we were assigned by APTRAD to create the new posters for their coming workshops. On this particular workshop called “I have a degree… Now what?” for translators and interpreters degree graduates in Brazil, the illustration concept was to picture a city in a Latin American style, where a hand holding the degree was trying to rise from the concrete jungle. To illustrate this we were inspired by Brazilian 60’s to 70’s style “Tropicália” of which we are fans both for its meaning as well as a cool influence on some of our illustration work at Dotgraf

Here's our "making of" for Translate Brasil illustration work. Thanks to the iPad Pro we could create an immensity of graphic elements.

Here’s our “making of” for Translate Brasil illustration work. Thanks to the iPad Pro we could create an immensity of graphic elements. Now these elements weren’t simply placed together expecting to work, we had two grids and two concepts in mind, aiming for a specific end result. One thing for sure, this work process is pure fun as we believe it shows too. Mega thanks for Aptrad – Associação de Profissionais de Tradução e de Interpretação for the inspiration and creative freedom.
Working abroad is mind opening though more important than the personal growth experience, is what you do with the knowledge acquired. After being Art Director at Boomerang – now Accenture – started rebuilding Dotgraf into a relevant Design Studio, part of Porto’s Design Scene. Why back to Porto? Because Porto is an inspiring city, which I’m proud to be from and design action in Portugal is only happening here. So the challenge has been to create a steady growth focused on delivering the highest quality to our clients and building foundations, because we’re here for the long run. 2019 was another great year for Dotgraf! I mean, the team is working better than ever, new partner Art Director Susana Espadilha joined us and the projects are super interesting from France, Switzerland, Spain, to our Portuguese clients and awesome projects for growing base of French entrepreneurs based in Porto… This points a steady growth and direction to the future, what we’ve dreamed for Dotgraf, a Porto’s design studio. Amazing times for sure!
